Nenchakathe by Sharreth

A soft ghazal like silken rendering by Sharreth. Very sophiticated song, not for the ordinary listener. A strange kind of 'Viraham'. The real credit for this song is for Viswajith. Viswajith uses his understanding of the Hindustani traditions and instruments expertly to place it in a unique genre. You would not know if it was a ghazal, a bhajan, a kawali (especially the chorus). A good experiment.

The beat is amazing.  And immensely refreshing too. At last, here is a naadan pattu, or folk song, in all its pristine beauty - as fresh as the country side. Again this is what you will want from Kavalam Sreekumar. Such mastery of the folk traditions.  The master singer brings out all the subtle nuances of the tune and embellishes the song with much flourish.

Story of Saranapadham

Mochitha started writing a couple of these songs for the background of a section in the TV program Udayamrutham almost 10 years back. Viswajith was just an upcoming music director then and of course no one knew Mochitha as a song writer. Mochitha got so inspired and began to write a few more on the same theme. But they never wanted to make it a song collection then. Viswajith also got busy after that. Kaavalam Sreekumar had also collaborated with the team at that time. Almost two and half years later, in 2009, they got together again and completed the album. That is why this is not in the format of a regular commercial album.

It seems that Viswajith did the tunes and then chose Sharath to do justice to the choice of melodies and thalam. It is said that Sharath was so impressed with the tunes and readily agreed.

The section in Udayamrutham was called Saranapadham, the same name was given to the album.

Another interesting anecdote is that the 'kallu karadu' song was actually inspired by words that Mochitha's mother had written. Mochitha had picked up the song and polished it to suit the tune.

Now, Saranapadham is making a comeback to the market due to its demand. It was sold out when launched and since then, it has been living in memories of music aficionados. With another Sabarimala season coming alive, the demand to bring back Saranapadham reached a crescendo.
